On Thursday February 18,  there were 12 teams who made trades that involved 27 players. Just beating the deadline.

  • CHICAGO traded John Salmons, the conditional right to swap 2010 first round picks, a 2011 second round draft pick, and a 2012 second round draft pick to MILWAUKEE for Joe Alexander and Hakim Warrick.
  • WASHINGTON traded Dominic McGuire and cash to SACRAMENTO for a conditional 2010 second round draft pick.
  • NEW YORK traded Nate Robinson and Marcus Landry to BOSTON for Eddie House, J.R. Giddens, Bill Walker and a conditional 2014 second round draft pick (I think Robinson is a good and energetic player, but parting with House? Probably a move I question most. If it ain’t broke in Boston, Danny Ainge, why mess with it? You don’t bring down the ‘house’).
  • MILWAUKEE traded Jodie Meeks and Francisco Elson to PHILADELPHIA for Royal Ivey, Primoz Brezec, and a 2010 second round draft pick.
  • UTAH traded Ronnie Brewer to MEMPHIS for a conditional future first round draft pick (the only thing that surprises me with this Utah move is that this isn’t Carlos Boozer, instead).
  • SAN ANTONIO traded Theo Ratliff (yes, he’s STILL in the NBA!!) to CHARLOTTE for a 2016 conditional second round draft pick.
  • HOUSTON traded Tracy McGrady to NEW YORK. HOUSTON traded Carl Landry, Joey Dorsey and cash to SACRAMENTO. NEW YORK traded Jared Jeffries, Jordan Hill, a condition right to swap 2011 first round draft picks and a future first round draft pick to HOUSTON. NEW YORK traded Larry Hughes to SACRAMENTO. SACRAMENTO traded Kevin Martin and Hilton Armstrong to HOUSTON. SACRAMENTO traded Sergio Rodriguez to NEW YORK (ok, now that Tyrek Evans has come on the scene, Sacramento no longer needs Martin, who was lighting it up on offense…but Larry Hughes? I’m not feeling this one. And Houston’s decision to trade Carl Landry is a shocker considering his play down low. Now Tracy McGrady is another story, as it seems the Rockets were moving on pretty well without him in the lineup. Their fast paced when McGrady’s out, but a half court team when he’s in. The West moves fast, so Houston’s better off without him)
  • CHARLOTTE traded Acie Law, Flip Murray and a future first round draft pick to CHICAGO for Tyrus Thomas (folks, Thomas was becoming too much of a full time babysitting job, I guess, for Bulls’ head coach Vinny Del Negro).

Other transactions across the Association this month…

Wednesday, February 17

  • Cleveland trades Zydrunas Ilgauskas, the rights to Emir Preldzic and 2010 first-round draft pick to Washington for Antawn Jamison (getting Jamison was one of the smart moves made, but surely this can’t be a good-bye for Ilgauskas. I expect he’ll resurface after he clears his 30 days. The Cavs are going to need him!).
  • L.A. Clippers trade Sebastian Telfair to Cleveland (I wish he’d stuck with his decision to play for Rick Petino at Louisville, instead of going from high school to the pros!).
  • Washington trades Drew Gooden to L.A. Clippers (a good player becoming a journeyman in the league.  Has to be frustrating for Gooden. What a sad state of affairs…)
  • New York trades Darko Milicic and cash to Minnesota for Brian Cardinal (remember Darko, who Detroit selected 2nd-before Carmelo Antony- in the 2003 draft? Right, turned out to be a bust).

Tuesday, Feb. 16

  • L.A. Clippers trade Marcus Camby to Portland in exchange for Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake (I know Camby was reportedly surprised by this move, but hopefully not mad about it since he’s now with a top 8 seed in the West. Besides, Portland needed a viable big man with no injuries to help now. And, at this point, in his third NBA season, they’re not getting it in Greg Oden)
  • Clippers waive Ricky Davis (he made some highlights a few season ago, but I tell ya, athleticism ain’t all that anymore. Gotta have the fundamentals of the game, as well as the attitude of knowing your role with a team. If you don’t have an attitude of a leader, guess what? The coach will normally eliminate you from holding that title).

Saturday, Feb. 13

  • Dallas Mavericks trades Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, James Singleton and Quinton Ross to Washington for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson (You know I have something to say about this. Mavs get some good players in this deal but I still have a wait-and-see attitude. But it seems mine is much better than Howard’s. According to reports the Mavs organization felt his became a stinker in the lockerroom. But they didn’t have time to wait until attitude towards them, or his ankles got better. Maybe for the best both parties moved in a new directionHoward East)

The NBA announces Dirk Nowitzki will be on-site at American Airlines Center on Monday, January 25, selling tickets to fans for NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas.

Nowitzki will sign autographs for the first 100 people who purchase a Jam Session ticket at Monday’s event.  In addition, the first 10 ticket purchasers will win the opportunity to attend an exclusive meet-and-greet with Nowitzki during Mavs Team Night at Jam Session on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

NBA All-Star Jam Session, which will take place Feb. 11-13, 2010 at the Dallas Convention Center, features more than 11 acres of NBA All-Star excitement.  Jam Session offers fans the experience of a lifetime with basketball-themed attractions, the chance to collect free autographs and meet NBA and WNBA Players and Legends.  For more information about NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas, please visit www.nba.com/jamsession.

People let me tell you. You don’t want to miss out of the Jam Session and just to give you an idea of how good of a time I interviewed Gail Hunter, NBAs Vice President of Events and Attractions. She’s behind the scenes putting all of the events surrounding all-star weekend, and said the Jam Session will cover about 450, 000 square feet of space at the convention center, and approximately 33 activities will be going on inside.

I’ve been before, and literally spent a full day in that place…working it like it was a full time job. You won’t be disappointed and your bank account is safe because the Jam Session is also one of the few affordable activities that still allow you to enjoy the NBA experience.

Event Dates for the Jam Session:

Thursday, February 11th from 4pm-10pm

Friday, February 12th from 4pm-10pm

Saturday, February 13th from 9am-10pm

Ticket Prices (ticketmaster.com, American Airlines Center Box Office, 1-800-4NBA-TIX):

Adults $20

Children (ages 3-12) $12

Seniors/Military (with valid ID) $12

Kids ages 2 and under are F-R-E-E (I don’t know about you, but this is one of my fave words!)

It is truly uncertain which team will show up in those Dallas Mavs uniforms.

On Sunday, mind you ,while most of the sports world watched the Dallas Cowboys get embarrassed in Minnesota, the Mavs were bullied during the first of five games on the road by the likes of Chris Bosh and the Toronto Raptors 110-88.

But on the following night, just when you think they’d probably sink again, they play like they mean it. On the second game of TNT’s triple header on MLK Holiday, the Mavs beat the Boston Celtics on the road 99-90.

So the night before, they obviously played no defense by evidence of giving up 110 points to the opponents. Then, they play sound defense, rebounded with a +3 margin over the Celts, which opened the floodgates for a transition game the Mavs want to run having Jason Kidd at the point.

The success in transition led to Dirk Nowitski having a game high 37 points, and Jason Kidd had a double-double with 13 points and 17 assists. Although the Celtics played without Kevin Garnett, the team they have assembled (with the addition of Rasheed Wallace) is still good enough to beat anybody, at any time. But, the Mavs didn’t break last night.

Even Cheryl Miller couldn’t help herself, so at the end of the game she asked Nowitski what was up with his “Jeikel and Hyde” Mavs team.

Don’t blame her. Good win in Boston. But I second Miller’s SHEmotion. So I ask a similar question. Just who are these Mavs ?

In the name of stability, I wish they’d pick one.

What really should’ve been a Mavs-land celebration of Dirk Nowitski becoming the 34th player in NBA history to score 20,000 points, coupled with a ‘W’ over the Los Angeles Lakers at the American Airlines Center last night, was merely bittersweet. Bringing little to no defense to their game, Mavs blew an chance to go up 2-1 in their four game series with the Lakers by losing 100-95.

Dirk was grateful, but not at all thrilled after the game. “He’d rather have the win than 20,000 points. That’s where the disappointment is,” said Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle. “He’d do anything to win any ball game and he wouldn’t care how many points he scored.”

Thanks to Kobe Bryant’s sudden healing from back spasms, he crashed the party by hitting a jumper with less than a minute remaining in regulation. And Erick Dampier missed two free throws after he was fouled to tied the yellow ribbon around the gift box for the Lakers.

Five Lakers scored in double figures and Andrew Bynum led with 22 points and 11 rebounds.  Also in double digits was Lamar Odom (18 and 14 rebounds), Ron Artest (16 and 11 rebounds), Jordan Farmar (12), and Kobe Bryant(10).

And speaking of Byrant. What a game he played last night.  I’m not just talking about the fact that he nails the big shot in the fourth, but from pre-game until the fourth quarter, Bryant vacillated back and forth as to whether he would play or not. Lying on his back most of the first half, he was suddenly back straight and shots fundamentally falling. Like a thief in the night he stole what would’ve been an awesome end to a historic night for Nowitski, the Mavs organization, and their fans.

But who can blame Bryant for taking what they let him have?  The Mavs players, with the exception of Nowitski, took the bait and the night off on constant defense and other intangibles so they got played at the end by the great orchestrator nicknamed the Black Mamba.

Gosh that’s gotta be one of, if not THE worst nicknames in NBA history!! but that’s another story for another time…

Nowitski posted 30 points and 16 rebounds, and the height of the game was him becoming the 34th player in NBA history to score 20,000 points (20,014 at end of last night’s game). The problem is it didn’t equate to a win over the defending champions, also minus Pau Gasol, who sat out with a bad hammy.

“We should have a lot of energy tonight. We should have played better,” Nowitski said.  “It’s frustrating.”

I bet. And I’m sure the fans feel the same way. Other than the round of applause and standing ovation (thank you, Rhianna!), the Mavs didn’t give their fans a lot to cheer about. The game was too close for comfort almost the entire night. But that’s what happens when a jump-shooting team like the Mavs don’t play defense. Especially, when their offense shoots 42 percent from the field, while the defense allows opponents 48 percent- they lose.

The plan to get over the decisive loss at home to the Utah Jazz, so the whole thing had Nowitski scratching his head in the lockerroom.

And Carlisle looked as if he’d scratch a bald spot atop his head at any moment trying to figure out what the real deal with his team’s struggles with a maintaining a balanced attack. He said he knows the big issue is that his team isn’t playing defense and lacks reliable offense from other players.

“It’s tough when we have to pile on and tell Dirk to go win the game for us in the last three minutes. It’s not fair to him,” said Carlisle.

“A lot of that could have been eliminated had we made several other basketball plays that may have been totally unrelated to offense.”

Yeah. That’s what elite teams do.

Game on at American Airlines Center in Dallas tonight, where the LA Lakers and the Dallas Mavs wil tip off at 7:30 pm CST.

The last time these two faced off, it was January 3. The Mavs displayed one of their worst defensive efforts, losing 131-96. You’d think it was a bad night for the Lakers since Kobe Bryant only scored about 15 points that night. Not so. The Mavs allowed six of Bryant’s teammates score in double figures, so really, a slow night on the job for #24.

But coming into round three of their four game series this regular season, the Lakers and Mavs are even at one win apiece, and first and second in the Western Conference, respectively.

Word was that it was uncertain Bryant would go tonight after that bout with back spasms, which took him out of the game in San Antonio last night (which the Lakers lost). But I’m not buyin it. Like any other player who looks to wreck shop on Mavs court, he’ll be healed just before tip off!

They’re losers of five straight on the road, and barley hanging on to that first place spot in the West. Where the Mavs behind them in second.

Other notes:

Dirk Nowitski is 16 points from becoming the 34th player in NBA history to be in the 20,000 points club. I hear you sighing, but yes, that would be another reason to say he will be one of the greats to ever play in the league. Period.

Eduardo (Eddie) Najera is back. After leaving Dallas for the Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, and recently the New Jersey Nets. In exchange for Kris Humphries and Shawne Williams, he returns to Mavs, whom he played for his first four years in the NBA.

After last night’s lackluster performance in Los Angeles, where the Mavs lost 131-96 to the Lakers, I’ve gotten this question all morning from people on my facebook, via text message, and the like:

What’s up with those Mavs?

Good question. But, since I don’t suit up for the team, I’m not the one to give a direct answer. And, I’m not sure if they know the key to their issues are either. Judging from that performance it was just a laziness by the Mavs coupled with the fact is was probably payback for the Lakers, who were stunned by the Mavs 94-80 at the Staples Center back in October.

The best way to describe that Sunday night whipping handed down by Kobe Bryant and company. Bryant took it light, by the way, with only 15 points in 32 minutes of action.

The beating started at the tip, really. At the end of the first quarter, the Mavs had only 13 points to the Lakers’ 30 and it continued down hill from there. It didn’t help that the Mavs brought no defense, thus allowing even a struggling Jordan Farmar to let loose with 24 points off the bench.  And it made no difference that Pau Gasol went down in the first quarter with a strained left hamstring, either.

It just wasn’t a good night or look for the Mavs so being back home on Tuesday is good a good time as any to atone for lackluster defensive play which resulted in a 1-2 road trip.

But it’s going to take more that 22 points from Dirk Nowitski. Defensive stops, particularly on those opposing guards on the perimeter will make wins happen for the Mavs.  And, a grand impact most of us have anticipated from Shawn Marion. It’s going to take more than six points. Same for Josh Howard and Jason Terry. Even though he’s taken and made more shots this season, Jason Kidd went scoreless against the Lakers-zero of six shots from the floor.

At least half of the four Mavs named above must step up and help Nowitski consistently on the offensive end.

On any given game night.

I’m sure Coach Rick Carlisle couldn’t believe all he got from Howard was seven points (2-11 from the field) in 23 minutes of action and Terry’s 10 points.

And, according to NBA.com, neither could Laker center, Andrew Bynum. “That was unbelievable,” Bynum said. “I think the rim was like the ocean for everybody today. Everybody was just throwing it up there and it was going in.”

If the Mavs keep making waves for the opponent, like giving up 64 percent shooting as they did to the Lakers Sunday night, they’ll be the one team in the Wild West whose ship will sink fast.

Next game: Tuesday night at the American Airlines Center, against the Detroit Pistons, a team riding on a nine game losing streak.  Tip-off time is 7:30 pm cst.

It’s 3:40 remaining in regulation, at Forester Field House in Dallas, TX, where I’m now watching the Lincoln Tigers against Dallas Episcopal.

It was pretty close in the first half; matter of fact too close, it seemed for Lincoln’s head coach Leonard Bishop.

So two quarters later Lincoln seperated themselves from the Eagles despite an intentional and technical foul on Lincoln in the fourth quarter.

Lincoln beats Episcopal 61-49 and will play a second game, here at Forester, against the winner of Segoville and FW South Hills.

Question I asked myself: do I want to stick around THAT long?

Dirk Nowitski’s game high 27 points and JJ Barea’s 22 wasn’t enough to carry the Mavs, so they lose 81-85 to a young and athletic team. Something I’m noticing the Mavs have subjected themselves to lately.

Point drop-offs: Josh Howard and Jason Terry both posted only eight points, Tim Thomas, who scored 22 points Sunday in Dirk’s absence, had zero all across the board. Shaw Marion, as I mentioned earlier, who has struggled in the points department as of late didn’t score tonight either.

Two can’t play this game. But five can.

And if they play this same way on Friday, as they did tonight, Mavs are subject to the same defeat…against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Another young, athletic team they’ve started losing to lately.
