Despite a dominating Game 4, the Dallas Mavericks were defeated by the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, 88-106. This title breaks the tie between the historic franchises of the Boston Celtics (18) and the Los Angeles Lakers (17), making the Celtics the most decorated NBA franchise in the association’s history. As the confetti fell onto the floor of TD Garden, Jayson Tatum, who had 31 points and 11 assists, would say that “this is going to be a night that I will remember for the rest of my life, from the game, the celebration, these moment” and did everything in his power “to make sure we won this game”.

Jaylen Brown was named the Bill Russell Finals MVP. Brown averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5 rebounds in the five games he played in this year’s Finals. Brown would “share” the honor with his teammates especially his “partner in crime”, Jayson Tatum. At the podium, the three-time All-Star would add that he’s “blessed” and “grateful”. “This was a full team effort. We had a great team. My teammates were great. They allowed me to lead us on both ends of the ball”.

For Dallas, their trip to the Finals stunned the sports world as they defeated three higher placed Western Conference teams in the playoffs, including the number one seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. Kyrie Irving believed that the Mavericks “answered a lot of questions this year on what we were capable of doing and now it’s just about being consistent”. Luka Dončić, despite leading in most categories while playing with multiple injuries, said it “doesn’t matter if I was hurt, how much I was hurt… I was out there. I tried to play but I didn’t do enough.” His home country of Slovenia has Olympic qualifiers in July, but Dončić feels he “has some decisions to make” while trying to recover from this season.
