When you meet Dr. John Carlo, CEO of Prism Health North Texas, it’s clear that community and public health are more than just a mission statement, they’re his life’s work. For nearly 40 years, Prism Health North Texas has been providing accessible healthcare across Dallas, and under Carlo’s leadership, the organization continues to push the boundaries of what affordable, whole-family care can look like, growing from a few thousands patients to more than 15,000 under his tenure
“We aim to serve as a medical home, focusing on whole-person care for all ages,” Dr. Carlo says. “Community health centers like ours provide high-quality, accessible care to everyone, regardless of their insurance status, income, or background.”
Care That Starts at Just $10
One of the biggest barriers to healthcare is cost. As a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike, Prism Health North Texas tackles that challenge head-on with a sliding fee scale that can make the fee for appointments as low as $10 for those paying out-of-pocket, based on income and other factors. Patients can also use Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance, but the promise remains the same: no one is turned away from receiving care.
To ensure patients aren’t lost in the paperwork, Prism Health North Texas offers financial managers who guide families through Medicaid registration and other available programs. “We want to make sure the system works for our patients, not against them,” Dr. Carlo emphasizes.
Whole-Person, Whole-Family Services
Prism Health North Texas’s five health centers and three pharmacies are designed to meet a wide range of needs under one roof, making healthcare easier and more efficient for families. Their services include:
- Adult and pediatric primary care to keep families on track with preventive screenings, wellness visits, and vaccinations. Same day and next day appointments are available, ensuring families can focus on staying well rather than long wait times to see their providers.
- Women’s health services with same- and next-day appointments, ensuring that moms and kids can be seen on the same day at the South Dallas Health Center.
- Dental care, offered at two centrally located offices.
- Mental and behavioral health support that prioritizes treating the whole person.
- On-site pharmacies, meaning prescriptions can be filled immediately after an appointment.
This integrated model allows multiple family members to receive care at the same time, saving parents time off work, reducing transportation needs, and cutting costs.
Deep Roots in Underserved Dallas
Prism Health North Texas’s clinics are strategically located in South Dallas, East Dallas, Oak Cliff, and Oak Lawn, areas where healthcare access has historically been limited. “Community health centers work where the community needs it,” Dr. Carlo explains. “We are intentionally in pharmacy and health access deserts, because that’s where families need us most.”
How the Community Can Help
Even with decades of impact, the future of community health centers depends on ongoing support. “With uncertainty around federal funding, community engagement is more important than ever,” Dr. Carlo notes. Prism Health North Texas invites Dallas residents to utilize its services, volunteer, attend community events, or support financially when able. For more information about services, appointments, or ways to support, visit PHNTX.org.
