Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett issued a statement today marking the four-year anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, describing it as a defining moment in the fight to preserve American democracy.

โ€œFour years ago, our nation endured the gravest assault on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power since the Civil War. The attack was no spontaneous act but a premeditated effort by violent militias, emboldened by former President Donald Trump. His incendiary call to actionโ€”โ€˜If you donโ€™t fight like hell, youโ€™re not going to have a country anymoreโ€™โ€”ignited chaos. In just five hours, five lives were lost, 174 law enforcement officers were assaulted, and the sanctity of the Capitol was defiled, leaving $30 million in damages.โ€

Crockett highlighted the revelations of the bipartisan House Select Committee investigating January 6, which detailed the depth of Trumpโ€™s involvement. Federal authorities have arrested over 1,500 individuals in connection with the insurrection, including Trump himself. Yet, she criticized what she called “selective amnesia” among Republicans, noting their attempts to downplay the violence and the ongoing threats posed by Trump and far-right groups.

โ€œMy fellow House Democrats and I will not condone attempts to rewrite history. January 6, 2021, was not a peaceful protest but a violent insurrection aimed at undermining our democratic process. We honor the courage of the Capitol Police and remain steadfast in defending democracy, regardless of who occupies the White House,โ€ she affirmed.

Crockettโ€™s remarks underscored the significance of vigilance against authoritarian threats and the enduring importance of truth and accountability in safeguarding democracy.
