Overview:
The 2025 Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was a celebration of Black style and dandyism, with a theme of "Tailored for You" inspired by Monica L. Miller's book "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity." The event raised an unprecedented $31 million, setting a new fundraising record, and featured a lineup of distinguished attendees including gymnast Simone Biles, track star Sha'Carri Richardson, director Spike Lee, actress Regina King, musician Usher, basketball star Angel Reese, and rapper Doechii. The Met Gala also honored the late designer Virgil Abloh's approach to deconstructing shape and form, with many outfits paying tribute to him.
The Met Gala, fashionโs most exclusive night, returned in 2025 with a powerful blend of Black culture, history, and artistry. Officially a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, this yearโs event supports the Metropolitan Museum of Artโs spring exhibition, sharing the Galaโs name and theme: a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through the lens of dandyism.

Honoring Black Style and Dandyism
The exhibition explores dandyismโa sophisticated mode of dress and self-expression rooted in the Black cultural movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. More than just fashion, Black dandyism emerged as a commentary on race, power, and individuality. After Emancipation and throughout the Harlem Renaissance, elegantly tailored style became a means for Black men and women to reclaim their presence and defy societal discrimination.

As Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter explains, โBlack Dandyism is a form of performance.โ Many of the 2025 Met Gala attendees embraced this philosophy, using their “blue carpet” looks to express identity and pay homage to the movement’s enduring influence.
Fashion icon and Harlem legend Dapper Dan reflected on the nightโs significance:
“Dandyism was never just about looking goodโit was about showing the world that we had style, intellect, and dignity, even when society tried to deny us that. Tonight, we continue that tradition.”
Celebrity stylist and image architect Law Roach added: “Tailoring isnโt just about seams and stitchesโitโs about storytelling. What we saw tonight was our history tailored into modern masterpieces. Black creativity is limitless.”
Theme and Dress Code

This yearโs theme draws inspiration from Monica L. Millerโs groundbreaking 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. While the overarching theme honored Black Dandyism, the dress codeโโTailored for Youโโencouraged attendees to embrace menswear silhouettes while showcasing their individual creativity.
Many outfits also paid tribute to the late designer Virgil Abloh, whose visionary approach to deconstructing shape and form was reflected in the sharp, geometric, and crisply tailored styles gracing the event.
Star-Studded Host Committee and Co-Chairs
The host committee featured a dynamic lineup, including gymnast Simone Biles, track star ShaโCarri Richardson, director Spike Lee, actress Regina King, musician Usher, basketball star Angel Reese, and rapper Doechii. Teyana Taylor, La La Anthony, and Ego Nwodim hosted the eventโs livestream.

The co-chairs, distinct from the host committee, included honorary chair LeBron James, who announced he would skip the event due to a knee injury. His wife, however, attended. Other co-chairs were actor Colman Domingo, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, music mogul Pharrell Williams, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
A Night of Symbolism and Record-Breaking Philanthropy
Despite rain showers, the event unfolded with grace and grandeur. The traditional red carpet was replaced by a midnight blue one, adorned with narcissus flowersโsymbols of self-recognition and appreciation. Artist Cy Gavin, inspired by narcissus blooms outside his studio, helped integrate the flower into the Galaโs aesthetic.
In a testament to the eventโs growing impact, the 2025 Met Gala raised an unprecedented $31 million, setting a new fundraising record. Funds raised from the gala are distributed between the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute operating costs, staff salaries, curation of exhibitions, further research into fashion history and textiles, and preservation of physical spaces in the institute including the conservation lab and the Irene Lewisohn Costume Reference Library.
The Costume Institute operates as financially independent from the rest of the Met, thus the need for their annual gala.

More Than a Gala
The 2025 Met Gala wasnโt just a fashion eventโit was a celebration of history, artistry, and resilience. By spotlighting Black Dandyism, the evening honored a tradition of elegance and self-expression that continues to empower Black communities and influence global fashion today.
