Governor Greg Abbott recently signed an expansively prohibitive abortion bill. Touting the bill as providing at least six weeks for a person to seek abortion in Texas, Gov. Abbott believes that is more than enough time for a menstruating person to seek medical services.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (NY) on CNN with Anderson Cooper, however, broke down menstruation in a way that has the cis- world shook.
“…but in case no one has informed [Gov. Abbott] before in his life…six weeks pregnant means two-weeks late for your period,” Cortes educates.
Admittedly, I am a cis-male writer. So, as a person who does not menstruate, I believe that a person who does menstruate, just as any person, demands agency over his or her own body. But the idea that this concept must be broken down on national television and still blows the mind of so many of us, demonstrates how woefully ill-equipped any man is/would be to legislate the reproductive rights of a biologically different person.
