The funds will serve as a resource for North Texas families experiencing economic hardships caused by the emergence of monkeypox.
DALLAS, SEPTEMBER 28, 2022 – During a press conference last Thursday, September 22, Abounding Prosperity Inc., its HOPE Health and Wellness Center and Dallas Southern Pride launched the Monkeypox Relief Assistance Fund. Monkeypox has had an astounding effect on Dallas County with more than 689 active cases. This is especially true among the Black and Hispanic LGBTQ+ communities, as they have the most cases of monkeypox, but are the least vaccinated. Disparities in health status -specifically the lack of access to information and healthcare – has contributed to low vaccination rates.
Additionally, the virus has forced many to take extended time away from work without compensation.
The Monkeypox Relief Assistance Fund will serve as a resource for individuals who are having difficulty meeting basic essential needs like providing food, shelter and medical care for themselves and their families due to contraction of the virus. One hundred percent of funds raised will be used to provide food boxes, home care kits and monetary assistance to those eligible.
“The healthcare system has been wrought with inequalities that have disproportionately impacted Black and Brown people and other marginalized communities for several decades. The advent of monkeypox and COVID 19 have placed these injustices on display yet again,” said Kirk Myers-Hill, founder and chief executive officer, Abounding Prosperity Inc. “We are making calculated efforts to fight this virus by hosting a free daily vaccine clinic and assisting through the Monkeypox Relief Assistance Fund.”
Local dignitaries and elected officials, including Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Omar Narvaez, City Council District 6; Councilman Adam Bazaldua, City Council District 7; and Councilman Jesse Moreno, City Council District 2 joined the press conference to share their insight and express the urgency around supporting such efforts to help contain this virus.
Dallas-based Atmos Energy Corporation, one of the United States’ largest natural-gas-only distributors, is aiding in this effort with a donation of $2,500.
“It is our business to ensure our neighbors can sustain their basic human needs despite unforeseen circumstances they may be facing,” said Susan Harris, Manager of Public Affairs, Atmos Energy. “We are honored and pleased to partner with Abounding Prosperity Inc. to assist the communities we serve and call home, and we encourage others to do the same.”
