Overview:
Prism Health North Texas is encouraging North Texans to prioritize behavioral health and break the stigma surrounding therapy, counseling, and emotional support. Behavioral health focuses on how emotions, stress, and mental wellbeing influence the way people live day to day. When mental health struggles go untreated, behaviors often shift too. The organization offers culturally aware mental health services designed to meet patients where they are. Patients can access care in person or through telehealth appointments, making support more accessible for people balancing work, transportation challenges, or childcare responsibilities.
For many families across Dallas, conversations about mental health are still happening quietly- if they happen at all. But according to Dr. Charmeka Lipscomb, a family and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at Prism Health North Texas, caring for your mental and emotional wellbeing is just as important as managing your physical health.
โIn our community, we often say weโre โjust tiredโ or โjust stressed,โโ Dr. Lipscomb explained. โBut sometimes those feelings are signs that we need more support.โ

As March brings renewed focus on wellness and self-care, Prism Health North Texas is encouraging North Texans to prioritize behavioral health and break the stigma surrounding therapy, counseling, and emotional support.
Understanding Behavioral Health
Behavioral health focuses on how emotions, stress, and mental wellbeing influence the way people live day to day. When mental health struggles go untreated, behaviors often shift too.

โWe may isolate ourselves, stop eating well, avoid movement, ignore medical advice, or turn to substances to cope,โ Lipscomb said. โThose behaviors can create a cycle that deepens anxiety, depression, and stress.โ
She compares mental healthcare to treatment for any other medical condition. โWe take medication for high blood pressure and follow care plans for diabetes,โ she explained. โMental health deserves the same level of care and attention.โ
Confronting Stigma in the Black Community
Lipscomb says stigma remains one of the biggest barriers preventing people from seeking help, especially within Black communities.
โFor a long time, we were taught to be strong, to pray about it, and to push through,โ she said. โStrength and faith are important, but strength also means knowing when to ask for help.โ

Historical mistrust of healthcare systems and a lack of culturally aware providers have also contributed to silence around mental health struggles. Prism Health North Texas works to change that by creating affirming, judgment-free spaces where patients feel understood.
โTherapy and counseling can exist alongside faith, family, and community,โ Lipscomb said. โIt doesnโt replace those things, it supports them.โ
Knowing When to Reach Out
Many people wait until they are in crisis before seeking help, but Lipscomb says early support can make a major difference.
โIf youโre not sleeping, feeling anxious most days, relying on substances to cope, or simply feeling overwhelmed and stuck, those are signs,โ she explained. โYou donโt have to wait until everything falls apart.โ

Prism Health North Texas offers behavioral health services through six dedicated providers and a recovery specialist. Patients can access care in person or through telehealth appointments, making support more accessible for people balancing work, transportation challenges, or childcare responsibilities.
Importantly, patients do not have to be established medical patients with Prism to access behavioral health services.
What to Expect from a First Appointment
For those nervous about taking the first step, Lipscomb says the process starts simply: with conversation.
โYour first appointment is really about getting to know each other,โ she said. โWe talk about whatโs been happening in your life, your support system, your stressors, and what you hope will improve.โ
Appointments are private, collaborative, and centered around building a personalized care plan that meets patients where they are emotionally, culturally, and personally.
Care That Meets You Where You Are
Prism Health North Texas accepts private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and uninsured patients through a sliding fee scale. The organizationโs culturally aware behavioral health team understands the importance of honoring each patientโs background, faith, and lived experiences.
โTaking care of your mental health is healthcare,โ Lipscomb said. โAnd itโs never too late to start.โ
